Janelle E.

Master of Laws – 2021

Janelle pursued a Master of Laws (LLM) to change her current career trajectory.

“I spent most of my legal career in public service drafting legislation and regulations,” said Janelle. “My future focus is technology, intellectual property and corporate law.”

Janelle chose Northeastern Law’s online LLM program in part because it offered her the opportunity to specialize.

“Technology, intellectual property and corporate law have always interested me. Northeastern Law’s program provided me with the opportunity to obtain credentials in these emerging growth sectors from a renowned university,” says Janelle.

Janelle appreciated many facets of the program, including learning from faculty with experience in the field.

“Having practicing attorneys as professors was very useful because they shared their experiences in class,” said Janelle. “They were also able to give us real-world legal problems as part of the coursework.”

What were some of the most interesting concepts and skills you learned in the LLM program?

The technology law courses were on point to provide knowledge and skills in emerging growth sectors like technology, data privacy and intellectual property law.

What is one exceptional project you worked on in the program?

The most interesting project I worked on was a paper I wrote for Intellectual Property and Technology Law taught by Professor Jeff Blank. The paper was a roadmap to develop a legal framework for the regulation of social media algorithms.

What goals did you hope to achieve from the LLM program? In what ways is the LLM program assisting you in achieving your goals?

I would like to work in the technology law sector using my dynamic and responsive style and experience. Also, I hope to develop an online law school course that teaches the rules of statutory construction and how to draft effective and modern legislation and regulations.

By adding the LLM from Northeastern to my credentials and experience I have reinvigorated myself professionally mid-career.

What tips do you have for someone as they begin graduate school?

My advice is to be ready for the challenge of higher education and to have access to up-to-date technology at home. I would be lost without multiple monitors and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
