A Conversation With Online LLM Alumnae

13 April, 2021

Designed for lawyers trained internationally and in the U.S., Northeastern University’s online Master of Laws (LLM) program provides students with a thorough understanding of the ever-changing U.S. legal environment and the global practice of law.

With an industry-informed curriculum and optional legal immersion experiences, students have opportunities to network with fellow students, learn from lawyers with real-world experience and aptly prepare for the California bar.

We recently spoke with Iva Caridha, Rebecca Stewart and Elva Xia, three online LLM alumnae, about what led them to the online program, their experience in the virtual learning environment and advice they have for prospective students. Read through the Q&A below to hear directly from these graduates.

Rebecca Stewart

Stewart, who was drawn to Northeastern’s online LLM for its flexibility, says her undergraduate legal education and work experience in the field have led her to become interested in taxation and international business law.

Q: What about the online format appealed to you?

A: The online format allowed me to learn on an asynchronous schedule, meaning I did not need to align with U.S. time zones to participate in class. I was able to log in and work on course content whenever I wanted. Some courses even offered the ability to move ahead beyond the weekly requirements.

Q: How does the curriculum in the online LLM program prepare you for future success in the legal industry?

A: The international business law modules that are included in the LLM curriculum allowed me to learn about U.S. business structures, mergers and acquisitions as well as tax rules. This in-depth study will be helpful to me while working with U.S. clients in the future.

Iva Caridha

Iva Caridha

Caridha joined Northeastern’s online LLM in response to her desire to further her legal studies in a learning environment where she could move through the program at her own pace. With a law degree from the University of Tirana in Albania, Caridha was able to benefit from the flexibility that online classes offer while continuing a full-time work schedule.

Like Stewart, Caridha used her time in the LLM to build substantial knowledge of U.S. law. She also credits the Northeastern network with the chance to make connections among her peers and the program faculty.

Q: What lessons and skills taught in the online LLM program helped you find success in your current career?

A: In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of U.S. law, I am well-prepared to take the Bar exam. I’ve developed advanced analytical and research skills to aid me in my professional life.

Q: What advice do you have for current and future students completing the program?

A: I encourage current and future students of the online LLM program to try and interact with your professors and fellow students as much as possible not just in your courses, but through your discussion posts.

Elva Xia

Elva Xia

Xia, too, joined Northeastern’s online LLM because she was interested in learning more about the U.S. legal system. She had previously worked in legal risk management and found the online learning environment to be optimal for working professionals.

“I can manage my study planning and time according to my own schedule,” says Xia.

Q: How does the curriculum in the online LLM program prepare you for future success in the legal industry?

A: The curriculum available through this degree program provided me with a background and understanding of the U.S. fundamental legal system. I was able to closely study the laws that govern incorporating, in contract and in trade.

Q: What career opportunities have been presented to you from the LLM program?

A: Being a student in this program has allowed me to connect with facilities at local law schools. The online LLM helped me to enhance my management skills, especially in legal risk management. I’ve learned so much more about contracts and business associations, which are valuable to finding success in my career.
