Why Pursue an LLM?

A Master of Laws (LLM) gives attorneys the chance to distinguish themselves in the competitive legal market. Completing an LLM program provides international attorneys the opportunity to pursue a legal career path in the United States, while U.S. attorneys have the chance to specialize and dive deeper into a certain field of law.

“The purpose of a JD is to prepare someone to practice law, while the mission of an LLM is to provide advanced training.”

“8 Key Distinctions Between an LLM and a JD”
U.S. News & World Report | Published online on May 30, 2018.

As stated in the article “8 Key Distinctions Between an LLM and JD” published on the U.S. News & World Report website, an LLM allows attorneys to take more rigorous courses and dive deeper into theoretical thinking about the law. In addition, attorneys are able to go beyond general law practice, and specialize in areas like business law or intellectual property.

A Master of Laws (LLM) can be beneficial for your career in several ways. Each of the Northeastern LLM focus areas present unique learning and career opportunities, from becoming a trade lawyer to IP licensing counsel. Below are a few of the roles you can pursue with each track.
